A CHAT WITH APRÓ
Q: WHAT WAS IT THAT DREW YOU INTO ELECTRONIC MUSIC?
A: I actually studied "Technology and it's influence on Music" as part of my final year of high school and had a huge influence of the electronic aspects of music and production from my clarinet teacher. So I guess it always fascinated me how sounds could be created and manipulated with the help of technology. It wasn't until my mid 20's that I actually started properly appreciating electronic music, particularly house. And all my friends from back then are not at all surprised I became a DJ haha I was the playlist gal - quite staunchly in fact - for all our house parties and kick ons.
Q: WHAT FUELS YOUR PASSION FOR THE INDUSTRY AND HOW HAS YOUR TASTE IN MUSIC DEVELOPED OVER THE YEARS?
A: COMMUNITY!! And our shared joy and love for coming together, letting our hair down, feeling uninhibited and dancing and laughing our hearts out.
Which perfectly leads to the development of my music tastes. Through connecting with and inspiring community, I have been opened up to so many different styles and flavours of music. And the deeper I have gone into our community and my journey with music, the slower the bpm has been getting hahaha. I started out playing banging techno and now absolutely adore downtempo grooves. All the music I have learnt about and collected on the way though has stuck with me. I love that every moment in time has the perfect tune.
Q: WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE CURRENT STATE OF THE MUSIC INDUSTRY?
A: I think the thing that is testament to success at the moment is community. I really can't stress the importance of that enough! Those who are working and growing together are reaping the rewards - even in these crazy difficult times.
That said, the industry as a whole in this country is in a state of disarray. Whatever I can contribute to nurture, inspire, engage, support and help growth within the music sector, I will continue to do. I always feel like I should be doing more - but showing up when I can is something. More people need to show up with these intentions, even if it feels so small in comparison to the much larger issues at hand.
Q: WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST SPECIAL PERFORMANCE AS A DJ SO
FAR?
A: Oooo I have actually had a few just this year. Initiation Festival - my first time back at Love Camp in over 4 years - was INCREDIBLE. Earth Frequency - also at Love Camp and my first time back to the festival after a life implosion 4 years ago - was so so special. But my set at Esoteric Festival this year was one for the books. The artist after me never showed up, so I just kept playing. Then the artists following that were a guitarist and violinist doing a live performance - and after kindly asking me if they could sound check and jam with me and me VERY willingly obliging, we ended up jamming for 40mins which ate into their set time. Water SIgns gave up 30mins of their set to jam with me!! Mind blown! Simply, the magic that was being created - in 40+ degree heat mind you - just had to keep flowing. It was such a special moment and reinvigorated my need to play my clarinet more! Couldn't have asked for a better opportunity to showcase my skills and creativity at my first gig in Victoria!!
Q: WHAT'S IN THE PIPELINE FOR APRÓ?
A: Apró is casually ticking along with a few things in the calendar over the coming months. Now as a resident of Outra and back in the saddle with Love Camp, the perfect little opportunities keep flowing in, which is really so nice! A Melbourne trip is happening in July also which I am very excited about. But mostly I am honing in on my craft some more, practicing my clarinet again and hoping to bring that back in to the fold more often. Also having conncected with other musicians recently I am eager and keen to form a big ol' family band and create some cool magic whilst integrating live music as much as possible in to our electronic world. And just continue to do all the beautiful, creative things that bring me so much joy and love.
