A CHAT WITH CHRISTIAN KERR
Q: WHAT WAS IT THAT DREW YOU INTO ELECTRONIC MUSIC?
A: I've always been into music, as a teenager I was a rockhead, loving bands like Slipknot, Korn and Limp Bizkit. I hadn't had too much exposure to electronic music until I was about 18 when I attended Big Day Out and accidentally ended up in the Boiler Room watching the Chemical Brothers close the stage. It was instant love, from that moment on there were no more bands in my life, only the sweet, sweet sound of electronic synthesisers.
Q: YOU'VE BEEN AN ESTABLISHED BRISBANE ARTIST FOR OVER A DECADE, BASED ON YOUR EXPERIENCE, WHERE DO YOU THINK OUR INDUSTRY IS HEADED?
A: This is definitely a hard question to answer; I feel our beautiful Brisbane scene took a massive blow with COVID. The scene in this city has always been rather fragile and delicate; it takes a lot of time to cultivate a culture and community here. Bigger cities like Melbourne that have a world class party scene managed to recover quicker, where as we in Brisbane lost a lot of smaller venues that were the heart of our scene. Also the party gap caused by COVID put a big dent in the momentum of spreading quality underground music. This is one of the reasons I am inspired to work on projects like OUTRA, I want to do my part in helping Brisbane return to her former glory. So to come back to the original question of where I think the industry is headed? I think we are headed in the right direction, with hard work and big visions we will slowly grind our way back to where we were. Brisbane is growing, it is to become an Olympic city, the future looks bright and I am excited to be apart of it.
Q: WHAT IS THE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU'D GIVE YOUR YOUNGER SELF?
A: Oh wow this is a deep question. hmm. As we go through this magical experience called life we will make many mistakes that we wish we could change. However, if we live in a place where we would want to say anything to significant our past selves we have to be willing to give up our present life as everything would obviously change due to the information given. I am personally very happy and grateful for my current situation and the people around me so I wouldn’t say anything to important. I would just tell myself to eat healthy, stretch, continue to be happy, humble and grateful. :)
Q: WHAT FUELS YOUR PASSION FOR ELECTRONIC MUSIC?
A: My fuel is the scene, the friends, the moments, the laughs, the hugs, the dance floors, the lights, the speakers, THEM BIG BANGING KICK DRUMS! Honestly though, I am just so greatful to be apart of such a vibrant and magical scene, electronic music is the backbone of our friendship circle, its how we all met. Nothing is more special to me that being on a dance floor surrounded by my crew, shaking those limbs , listening to that music that makes you go urgghh...
Q: WHAT'S IN THE PIPELINE FOR CHRISTIAN KERR ?
A: The million dollar question, hopefully lots of growth. Growth with OUTRA, growth as a person, growth as a family. The older I get (I am getting older now) the busier I seem to be. Right now I am grateful to play the shows and be part of the events that I am associated with. We'll see where everything leads, but I would like to manifest some overseas music adventures!
