A CHAT WITH UNVEILED

Q: What inspired you to start dancing, and how has your journey evolved since then?
A:
There is much inspiration in the dance community, we stay connected, vibe off one another, practice together, and learn from each other. I have also often been inspired by many incredibly talented performers at festivals and gigs — anybody who presents something unique with skill and presence. I’m also deeply inspired by my mentor and teacher Rae Chrysalis, and my co-creator for Unveiled, Cass Kosmic. The beginning of my dance career came with a lot of practice. It was very humbling going from having very little knowledge about dance a couple of years ago, to gaining the experience needed to evolve to a professional level. It has been a wonderful, challenging journey with many ups and downs, and worth every moment.

Q: What's a particularly memorable performance and what made it stand out to you?
A:
Our troupe recently had the pleasure of curating the closing ceremony for Earth Frequency Festival. It was our most memorable performance so far. Everything was woven with a tremendous amount of love, thought, and intention. From the dance choreography, to our talented and dedicated crew, the speeches, the outfits — it was pure magic. It was such a privilege to co-create with a festival so dear to many people’s hearts. And connecting with the community to help it come to a close felt very profound. It was a sensational one I will never forget.

Q: How do you prepare mentally and physically for a big performance?
A
: Practice. Brushing up on previous skills and learning new ones is a great way to make a performance fresh, exciting, and dynamic.

Stretching. This one is often overlooked and just as important. Stretching the entire body out makes for a more fluid performance. If you’re using props it’s valuable to stretch wrists and fingers before a show. Your body always thanks you.

Research. If we don’t know an artist we are performing to, we always do our research by listening to a variety of their music beforehand. This ensures we know what vibe we are dropping into. This also helps us curate our outfits, props, and accessories.

Dropping in. Before a performance it’s great to drop in with the vibe, the music, the artists, and your team members. We also love to say a prayer and set a little intention before we head on stage.
